Tourist arrivals in Melaka is increasing from time to time and Melaka manage to get highest income from tourism industry.
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division, Melaka Chief Minister’s Department has been established by Melaka State Government on 4th October 2000 based on result of the State Government Meeting Council or ‘Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri Melaka’ (MMKN) which agreed to hire 23 contract posts as tourism sector was the major source of income for Melaka State.
In the early of Melaka Tourism Promotion Division establishment, 6 peoples from the Melaka Development Corporation or ‘Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Melaka’, (PKNM) has been borrowed or transfered to work for the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division and other relevant posts was added and arranged from time to time according to the needs and situations for tourism sector in Melaka.The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division is divided into two sections which are:
1. The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division itself
2. The Melaka Art Brigade or ‘Briged Seni Melaka’
Melaka Tourism Promotion Division, Melaka Chief Minister’s Department
The major functions of Melaka Tourism Promotion Division is to promote Melaka State as a unique tourism destination to all over the world according to Tourism Melaka 12 Sub-Sectors with its motto: “VISIT HISTORIC MELAKA MEANS VISIT MALAYSIA”.
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division is actively promoting Melaka State to all over the world by participating in tourism fairs and exhibitions, conventions, seminars, roadshows and travel marts in countries like Indonesia, Singapore, China, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Taiwan and some European countries.
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division is currently operating at Lot 6 – 10, Level 1, Melaka Media House, Business City Street, Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) City with 56 staffs consists of Managers, Administrative Assistants, Officers, Artists, Cultural Artists, Tourist Informers and Office Boys.
The General Manager of Melaka Tourism Promotion Division during my practical training last year was Mr. Nazary Ahmad who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Melaka Taming Sari Berhad (Taming Sari Tower) and the General Manager of the Melaka Hari Ini paper.
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division genarally has two management or division which consists of the Administration Division (Melaka Tourism Promotion Division itself – MITC) and another one is the Cultural and Artistic Division (Melaka Art Brigade – Bukit Peringgit). Both division is centralized and monitored under the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh. There are eight units or departments under the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division which are:
Research and Development Unit (R&D)
Meeting, Incentives, Convention and Exhibition Unit (MICE)
Promotion (Domestic and International) Unit
Cultural Unit (Melaka Art Brigade)
Melaka Art Brigade (Briged Seni Melaka)
The Melaka Art Brigade was established on March 1989 by the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department. From 1994 until 1996, this group has been managed by the Melaka Art Academy (Akademi Seni Melaka) for the administration of the group.
In 1996 until 1998, the Melaka Art Brigade has been managed by ‘Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Melaka until the group was dissolved started on January 1999. Melaka Chief Minister’s Department then realized that it is important to have an art group which represents and shows the Melaka State images, uniqueness and cultures to the world by performing shows and cultural performances, the Melaka State Government decided to establish and did the reoperation this group and the management has been given to the PM Cultural and Tourism Sdn. Bhd. (PMCT) started on April 1999.
On May 2002, the PM Cultural and Tourism Sdn. Bhd. (PMCT) faced a bad financial and management problems because of certain factors, the Melaka Chief Minister has been instructed to transfer and operate the Melaka Art Brigade under the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division. Currently, the Melaka Art Brigade was operating at Rumah Kerajaan, No. 7, Bukit Peringgit Melaka.
The vision of the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division is to make the Melaka State as a popular tourist destination in Asia with motto:
“VISIT HISTORIC MELAKA MEANS VISIT MALAYSIA”
There are three biggest missions of the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division in order to gain and develop tourism industry and tourist arrivals which are:
1. Developing Tourism Industry to contribute major source for economic growth (GDP) and jobs opportunities for Melaka State
2. Attracting 8.2 million tourists to visit Melaka by 2010
3. Extending tourists overnight and stay in Melaka to 3 nights by 2010
The objectives of the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division establishments are:
1. Melaka as a MUST visit destination in Malaysia
2. Melaka as a MICE destination
3. Contributes major source for economic growth (GDP) and jobs opportunities
4. Expands length of stay to 3 nights by 2010
5. Attracts 8.2 Million or 50% of foreigners to visit Melaka by 2010
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division also applying the effective strategies in order to achieve its vision and mission in the tourism industry as well as a tourism state leader in Malaysia. There were nine major tourism strategies that very effective and applied since the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division was established until present are:
1. Collaboration of government and non-government organizations (NGOs) sectors
2. New tourism products and services / renew / reoperation
3. Niche Market / Niche Product
4. Adequate human resources
5. World class facilities / adequate amenities
6. Promotion (Domestic and International)
7. Research and Development
8. Focusing on Tourism Melaka 12 Sub-sectors with motto:

9. Get supports from Government of Malaysia
The Melaka Tourism Promotion Division has five major functions. The Major functions of the Melaka Tourism Promotion Division are:
1. As a major source to promote Melaka tourism: Domestic and International
2. Provide tourism and events services
3. Prepared MICE needs and facilities
4. Research and Development (R&D)
5. Planning and Applying: Promotion, Events, R&D, MICE (Melaka, Malaysia, ASEAN, Asia and World)
