Ronda-Ronda: Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex (1st Melaka Planetarium)

Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex is one of the facilities that are provided by Melaka State Government in order to study and to explore the growth and the mystery of the universe. Melaka Mufti Department has been honored to realizing the State Government’s ambition.

Located at Kampung Balik Batu, Tanjung Bidara, Masjid Tanah, in the district of Alor Gajah, the astronomy complex is named after the great Arabic astronomer Abdullah Muhammad ibn Musa, who is also known as Al-Khawarizmi.  The complex was built at a cost of RM 20 million and equipped with an observatory, a planetarium, an astronomy training center, as well as a robotic observatory.  The training center was completed in 2007.

There were 3 main buildings in the Complex, which are the observatory, the Planetarium and the Training Centre. In the expansion of Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex, Melakan has the opportunity to study and appreciate astronomy deeper. Apart from that, new generation has the potency to bring the glory of astronomy in today’s world.

The Astronomy Day Celebration at the Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex is held during the months of April and May every year, and it is particularly popular among the main activities of the complex that attracts students and tourists alike.

A number of drills take place in the area, like the Aquatic training exercises conducted by the Civil Defense Department (JPA3) and the Fire and Rescue Services Department.  But there are plenty of other added attractions for the common beach-goers.  So this complex is not the sole attraction of the place; therefore, you can come here with the purpose of visiting the Tanjung Bidara Beach or you can visit the beach when you came to see the complex!

Please note that the place is managed by Muslim scholars, so wear modest Eastern clothes.  Strictly avoid tube shirts, short pants and mini skirts.

The complex is open daily from 9.30 am till 4.30 pm.
